The Dornier 328, or 328-100, is a regional twin turboprop airliner designed for short haul operations that can carry up to 33 passengers. Originally produced in Germany by Dornier, then from 1996 by Fairchild Dornier, the first prototype rolled out in October 1991 and the maiden flight took place on 6 December that year. Certification was granted in October 1993 and it entered service soon after.
The Do328 has two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW119B turboprops that drive fully reversible six blade Hartzell HD-E6C-3B propellers. Its fuselage is optimised for high cruising speeds and it is capable of operations from semi prepared airstrips and rough runways.
Variants include the 328-110 that has increased MTOW and extended range; the Do 328-120 with special features for short distance flights; and the Do 328-130 with improved rudder and increased speed.
The Fairchild Dornier 328JET, also known as the Envoy 3, is a jet powered version of the Do328. It has FADEC equipped Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306 turbofans mounted in underwing pods, plus strengthened fuselage frames, landing gear and brakes, as well as enhancements to its avionics software.
In June 2006, Germany-based 328 Support Services acquired the type certificate for the Dornier 328 and provides MRO services to the existing fleet. In 2019 the company announced development of a D328eco, a stretch fuselage version that should carry up to 43 passengers, designed for single pilot operations.
