Norwegian operator Rorvikfly has chosen to invest in a Piper PA34 Seneca for private use. “I tried to select a small twin which is affordable and hopefully not too expensive to maintain,” says CEO Harald Magne Bakken. “Whether I have made the correct decision remains to be seen. At the moment I only have a PPL certificate, but I am currently undergoing IFR training as my goal is to have a small twin for IFR flying. Right now the flights are private and we share the running costs.”

Magne Bakken says the aircraft suits his requirements in terms of capacity, weight and cost. It is also equipped with modern avionics. “I have already upgraded to Avidyne's IFD440 for approved LPV approaches as this is necessary for short field operations in Norway,” he continues. “The Seneca also has TCAS, weather radar, Stormscope, a de-icing boot and oxygen so it is suitable for IFR flights.”

He has also flown a Grumman Cheetah since 2009, but this is used solely for short distances such as travelling to his day job as a maritime pilot. Getting as many hours under his belt on the Seneca is the aim.
