The Hungarian National Police force (HNP) has added five MD 902 Explorer helicopters to its fleet. The rotorcraft join an air support unit that already includes three MD 500Es and have been acquired to replace the force's ageing Mi-2s. The deal means that HNP is now one of the largest fleet operators of MD aircraft in eastern Europe. The police force started flying the MD 500E in 1986.

The HNP's air support unit plays an integral role in executing Hungary's national security needs, helping the police to secure the country's borders and providing ground and air support when required. Head of the national police Karoly Papp welcomed the aircraft following a transfer from Baden-Württemberg in Germany in late January at Lizst Ferenc airport in Budapest.

HNP's 902s are equipped with night vision, three-axis autopilot, TCAS, digital video, high performance surveillance equipment and cargo hooks permitting 3,000 lbs of external load operations. Powered by two PW207E engines, the MD 902 features a fully articulated main rotor system, composite flex beams and rotor hub.
