Frasca and Garmin put heads together for more realism
When training software lacks the fidelity of the real thing, ‘negative training’ can result and a pilot's progress is stunted. Frasca's collaboration with Garmin to integrate the G1000 aims to reduce this eventuality.

Frasca International has partnered with Garmin to integrate Garmin G1000 NXi software into its Frasca RTD (Reconfigurable Training Device), in what it says is an industry first. The Frasca RTD is approved by the FAA as an Advanced Aviation Training Device and features Frasca's advanced aerodynamic software using flight test data, a browser/web based instructor station and out-the-window visual graphics for a realistic flying experience.

Designed to be reliable and easy to maintain, the RTS is reconfigurable between different aircraft models including the Cessna 172 and Piper Seminole as well as between analogue instrumentation and the G1000 NXi glass cockpit. The RTD can also be ordered with a single visual display or multiple channel displays for wrap-around, high-definition visuals.

By incorporating real Garmin G1000 NXi software in its RTD, Frasca is looking to ensure that all of the menu selections and button pushes are performed in the RTD as they should be in an aircraft, thus ensuring that users are learning the correct procedures and habits. Until now, lower cost simulators relied on imitated G1000NXi software which lacks the fidelity and realism of the real G1000 NXi. When a simulator differs from the aircraft, pilots can perform tasks differently from when in the actual aircraft, resulting in what the FAA's instructor's handbook describes as ‘negative training’.

G1000 NXi software also enables the Frasca RTD to include Garmin's newest features such as Synthetic Vision Technology with its three-dimensional ‘pathway’ view, a Terrain Awareness and Warning System, WAAS (LPV, LNAV/VNAV and Glide Paths) and easily updatable navigation databases.

“Working with Garmin to integrate the G1000 NXi software in to our RTD has enabled us to provide a device with excellent transfer of training to our customers,” states president John Frasca. “We have been integrating Garmin avionics into our FTDs and FFSs for years and being able to offer that in our lower cost products is truly ground breaking.”

Pricing for the Frasca RTD starts at $58,000, and varies depending on aircraft configurations and options.
