Aurora State airport, Oregon-based repair, maintenance, modification and manufacturing services provider Metal Innovations is set to receive FAA approval of a supplemental type certificate (STC) for its improved Cessna 208B Caravan cargo pod design for longer payloads and greater hauling flexibility.

The Cessna 208B cargo pod improvements address the current dimensional limitations by transitioning the current fixed layout to a value-added flex-use configuration. Adding a rear ramp door and replacing the immobile partitions with easily removable dividers allows owners to retain multiple compartments or transform the space into a never-before free span end-to-end 13.5"H × 32"W × 12'-16'L solution. In addition, the improvement creates immense hauling flexibility and efficient utilisation of the aircraft by shifting the transportation of long items such as full-dimensional lumber, skis, surfboards and even kayaks from the passenger compartment to the cargo hull where they belong.

"We have had numerous customers, especially those operating in remote locations, struggle with the cargo limitations created by the existing pod's immobile divider configuration. We are excited to offer them a fantastic solution for the streamlined transport of building supplies and recreational equipment," says CEO Kim Wilmes.

"We strive to develop products that improve efficiency and operators' competitiveness within the marketplace," adds COO Craig Wilmes. "Our new design allows customers to transfer items only previously able to fit in the cabin to the pod, freeing premium space for passengers and optimising shipment configurations.

Metal Innovations is currently booking cargo pod upgrade installation time slots for December 2022. Both onsite and in-house installation options are available.
