Overview

The smallest of the Beech King Air models is the King Air 90, a pressurised, all metal, low wing, twin turboprop with retractable landing gear. It was conceived as the Model 120 in 1961 with test flights of the proof of concept model starting May 1963. Deliveries commenced in Autumn 1964.

The 90 series has since undergone a number of airframe and powerplant modifications. In 1966 production switched to the A90 with PT6A-20 engines, and then in 1968 to the B90 with a larger wingspan, a recontoured rear fuselage, balanced controls and a gross weight increase.

The C90 was introduced in 1971, with greater wingspan and MTOW as well as PT6A-20A engines. The broadly similar PT6A-28-engined E90 was introduced the following year and the two were produced in parallel.

Further refinements resulted in the F90 in 1978, featuring the King Air 200 T-tail mated to the fuselage and wings of the E90, with PT6A-135 engines of 750 shp driving four bladed propellers.

The C90-1 entered production in 1982 and featured PT6A-21 engines and improvements to the pressurisation system. In 1983 the F90-1 was given redesigned engine cowlings, upgraded PT6A-135A engines and hydraulic landing gear.

The C90A was in production from 1984 until 1992. Then came the quieter C90B, and in 1994 a lower cost Special Edition C90SE with three bladed propellers, standardised interior and mechanical instruments.

Deliveries of the C90GT, with its 750 shp PT6A-135As commenced at the beginning of 2006, and upgraded versions were introduced in 2008, the C90GTi, and in 2015, the C90GTx.

Textron Aviation discontinued production of the entire King Air 90 family in March 2021.
